Part of my analysis will also involve looking at the intersection between the spread of Atwood’s work of speculative fiction and the varying degrees of “real-ness” or “reality” between text and activists who now dress like handmaids in political protest, thereby invoking the progression of adaptations of the disturbing tale and its integration into everyday lives. You can have a life or you can do some writing, but not both at once, because although life may be the subject of writing, it is also the enemy. But the Handmaids are pawns in this story, and this scene shows how they are manipulated by the constant threat of death – or worse.The implication is that age and lack of beauty are somehow moral failings as Serena Joy, Aunt Lydia, and the Commander are shown in great contrast to the Handmaids, Nick, and Luke, each of them beautiful and superior in their resistance.

In this case, the reader is cued to understand the “bad thing” as the terrifying news blaring out of the television.In its English-language usage in arts and literature since the mid-twentieth century, “speculative fiction” as a genre term is often attributed to Robert A. Nault has great skill when it comes to water colors, but her style is poorly matched to the subject matter. Thus, the comic format complements both the narrator's perspective — which reflects jumps in time, memory, and thought — and the story's frequent overlapping of reality and fantasy. The collaboration worked so well, Nault envisions future joint efforts, mentioning another of Atwood's books as her dream project. The hardcover edition is a matte black with stark white and red lettering and the small red figure of protagonist Offred, and it sets the stage beautifully for the story inside.
