Everdell: Newleaf, Mistwood, and The Complete Collection

As well as being two broad types of cards there are also five colours or “suits”. These suits of cards all work slightly differently, the green production cards will activate giving you resources periodically through the game. The purple cards will just help you gain points whilst the red ones can offer you different unique worker placement spots in your city. Blue cards offer ongoing abilities whilst the brown cards will give you powerful one time events. Over four seasons, players place their forest animal meeples to get resources to buy cards into a personal tableau, which give points towards winning the game or special abilities to help them build further. [2] The game starts simply, with the complexity increasing as a player's cards gain synergies from newly acquired cards. [3] In addition to the points they get from acquiring cards, players score by triggering events, from special events, from collecting certain combinations of card types, and from end game bonuses given by cards for acquiring certain other cards in their city. [4] [5] Reception [ edit ] Components of the game The Reservation Tokens allowing you to reserve a Meadow or Station card for yourself is similar to mechanics in other games, so it’s nothing revolutionary, but it can change the dynamic of the game significantly. It can allow you to better plan future turns, or it can lead to more direct player interaction in the form of reserving a card you know an opponent wants. The Station space that allows you to discard Meadow/Station cards, refresh, and draw is a great way to cycle through the cards that are available and get a resource from the train car that you really need. I really like the addition of the visitor cards as a way to score points at the end of the game. It’s a nice way of spreading out the points for meeting other conditions besides just the basic or special event cards. A follow-up to the game called Everdell Farshore has been announced and is expected to release in August 2023. [1] Gameplay [ edit ] The reservation tokens allow you to claim things in the meadow or station as your turn. You subsequently get a one resource reduction in the cost of the card too. This can help you claim the sweet cards that you need to get those synergies. For me this module is take it or leave it, it is so small that it can be easily incorporated but I don’t miss it if it is not there. Components Hall, Charlie (December 11, 2018). Your workers are woodland animals (initially in the base game until non woodland critters such as axolotls started to appear). You will be placing workers to gain resources that will allow you to play cards from your hand. Each card is worth end game points, but more importantly each will have a one time or ongoing ability that will aid you in your strategy as the game progresses. The card’s ability is often not related to the type but broadly speaking the constructions tend to have more “game breaking” abilities or strong ongoing effects compared to the critter cards. Additionally, if you have a construction already in your city, you are able to play the matching critter card for free. For example if you have the twig barge built in your city then you can subsequently play the barge toad card down for free rather than paying two berries. Everdell is a board game for 1 to 4 players designed by James Wilson and published by Starling Games in 2018. In the game, players take the role of forest animals building a city over four seasons by collecting resources, recruiting workers, and constructing buildings. The game has been well regarded by reviewers, with its art and components receiving strong praise. Elderkin, Beth (September 11, 2018).
