The love and attention that the individual stories receive, both in terms of sound and picture enhancement, by its dedicated team of restorers, is nothing short of miraculous. Given that much of the original archive is held either on original PAL Video Masters, or on the much inferior telecine, expectations were fairly low that the process would produce anything that was notably better than the original DVD releases. It is very satisfying to report that this assumption has been proven incorrect with each and every release of the these sets, the current Season 9 set being no exception. The films I have seen are still with that collector and there is no chance anytime soon of them being handed over to anyone. Don’t get me wrong I adore ALL of Doctor Who both Classic and Modern but Tom’s era will always be my favourite, well, joint first with Peter Capaldi’s era. 4 and 12 are my top number 1 favourites. Although perhaps unsung in comparison to other individuals such as Douglas Camfield, Michael E Briant was a prolific director for Doctor Who and lots of other series. ‘ Michael E Briant at the Helm‘ provides an interesting profile piece and reminds you how many classic Doctor Who stories he directed. Briant is also very magnanimous when telling the story of how his pitch for ‘The Boatyard’ was basically stolen to become ‘Howard’s Way’. Yet he bares no ill will, demonstrating what a lovely person he is. There is the equivalent of 33 episodes to restore if you count 2 versions five doctors (I know it’s feature length but it is the length of roughly 4 eps) and the special edition of enlightenment (it’s about 75 mins so 3 eps) plus with it being 8 stories there will be a significant amount of extras to digitise. It would be a lot of work.
