Description

Before the start of the game, the level, life, and throwing star cards are given to the team. The number of cards they receive depends on how many players there are: As profound as this experience can be for many, an equally large population simply finds it empty. If you aren’t invested in the concept and don’t work to find the brilliance, it will never manifest. For such players, The Mind is simply a dull game devoid of charisma. Those drinking the Kool-Aid appear ludicrous. From the available cards, separate out the bunnies and throwing stars. Deal out 1 throwing star and bunnies equal to the number of players. Example: Tim, Sarah and Linus are ready for level 1. Each of them receives 1 card, which they hold so that nobody can see anyone else's cards. The 3-person team starts with 3 lives and 1 throwing star. The levels go from 1 - 10.

Well, to start with, everyone indicates that they are ready to play by putting one hand on the table to form the “concentration phase”, a ritual that often involves eery stares around the table, sizings up and perhaps a stray giggle. Once all hands leave the table, play commences. The curious looks continue as you try to suss out what cards your teammates may have, with nothing but body language and timing to go off of. One round players may be rushing to put down their cards right away, stumbling over each other with their number 2 and 4. In another, silence falls as everyone waits, thinking “Surely my 53 can't be the lowest card…or can it?” With over 1 million copies sold The Mind is great for the whole family. Do you have what it takes to beat…The Mind? Also, there are so many important decisions being made by the group, all being made in silence: when to take a calculated risk with a few lives to spare, when to use a precious throwing star because you might be receiving one in an upcoming level, when to call for a moment of refocus so that everyone can catch their breath, when to eventually cave and play your number 98 card because you choose to believe the last card your friend across the table from you is holding is 99 or 100 and not 97. Never has a game made me feel so devastated when I make a wrong decision or so accomplished when I make a right one. And no matter the result, I constantly want to try again. It’s also important that everyone is silent throughout, as the game rules state that players must communicate by hand signals only. Take the following common situation: you’re slowly nudging a card towards the center when out of the corner of your eye, you spot one of your mates parroting you. As you both approach the terminus of open table space, a decision must be made. One of you must play your card first. You sit there a moment in indecision, staring each other in the eyes with a sense of intensity. Your brow furrows and that vein above your eyebrow comes to life. Then you go for it.

You start the game with a number of lives equal to the number of players. In a level, each player receives a hand of cards equal to the number of the level: one card in level 1, two cards in level 2 and so on.

Final thoughts on The Mind

In many ways, the experience is similar to the classic Ouija board. It offers a situation ripe for exploitation and allows players to do the heavy lifting and meet it more than halfway. This framework can produce euphoric moments shared between everyone at the table. That sense of exhilarating intoxication is powerful—and many tabletop games never achieve it. The Mind card game is like other card games such as Sushi Go Party and Bohnanza in that everything you need to play comes in one game set. What aroused my curiosity is these awards are usually reserved for some games with serious clout. The Mind didn’t read like this at all. It’s a small box co-operative card game that takes around 20 minutes to play. Some people question whether it is even a game! What is going on? Well, the good news is you can read my review to find out… Gameplay So if you feel like you and your friends and family are up to the challenge, read on to get all the information needed to understand the Mind Card game rules.
