Better than electrostatic headphones, the LCD-X doesn't care as it's moved around your head; there isn't any popping since there's nothing to short out. I like something neutral here as it will help mitigate any issues, and the ATOM is my go-to for that purpose.

Oftentimes you’ll get those out-of-your-head moments regardless of what headphones you’re listening with simply due to the fact that the song was engineered in such a way to give off that illusion. Here's another very good thing: the LCD-X have plenty of sensitivity to be enjoyed plugged directly into an iPod, iPad or iPhone. All you need is the Grado 3.5mm Adapter and possibly a lightning to 3.5mm adapter. In essence, the Audeze LCD-X’s mid-range resolution is a testament to its commitment to high-fidelity audio. These are not expensive. If you think these are expensive, you're approaching this from the wrong direction. These aren't electronic devices like TVs or imported Chinese bluetooth headphones or computers that go obsolete or fall apart every couple of years; these are professional American-made wired headphones that don't go obsolete and should last a lifetime. I still have expensive headphones I bought in the 1970s and 1980s that work just as well today as when they were new. The Timbre is also pretty incredible, as the tonality of instruments is superb and sounds much more realistic than the majority of other headphones out there. Transparency The LCD-X is an investment and could likely be the last headphone you’ll ever buy. However, other headphones like the Beyerdynamic DT1990 Pro are a better value at half the price. The mid-range performance of the LCD-X is equally impressive and complements its exceptional bass qualities.

The big earpieces that house the huge drivers leave lots of room for our ears. They feel great, even if heavy. If I had to recommend something amazing to get you started but that won’t destroy your wallet, I’d go with a simple clean combo of JDS ATOM + ATOM DAC. Bass – Bass extends pretty well down low with a very minor sub-bass roll-off below 40Hz, which is only perceivable when listening to songs which have deep sub-bass mixed in. Since most mastering engineers introduce a minor sub-bass roll-off below 35Hz in most songs anyway, LCD-X 2021's sub-bass roll-off isn't as perceivable with a vast majority of songs. Besides that, the rest of the bass response is extremely neutral and linear. Neutral bass tuning helps present the songs very cleanly. If the song has slam and rumble mixed in, that is exactly what you will perceive with the LCD-X and if the song doesn't have much bass mixed in, don't expect it to boost any bass from its side. Technically, bass is very well separated in the centre and you can hear the nuances of the bass tone very clearly because of LCD-X's high micro-detail retrieval ability.Another of the reasons for my attendance was an outgrowth of my recent participation in The Absolute Sound’s great new major volume, the Illustrated History of High-End Audio, Volume One: Loudspeakers—an invitation to dinner with friends and colleagues that I hadn’t seen in a number of years. The dinner was to be hosted by Jim Hannon, the vice president/group publisher of The Absolute Sound, and would take place on the Saturday night of the show. Robert Harley and Jonathan Valin and his wife, Kathy, were also to attend. The dinner was a very festive occasion, with great conversation, food, and wine. We discussed everything from our favorite recorded music, to how the harmonics of a violin were so difficult to reproduce by audio systems, and finally, to what we thought were the best-sounding exhibits at the show. Obviously, all of us were having a wonderful time and suddenly near the end of our get together, I was asked by Jonathan Valin, “Why don’t you review for The Absolute Sound?” To say that I was taken by surprise is an understatement. My answer was that I would have to think about that since I’d never written a review of any product in my long years of working in audio. Undeterred, he then asked if I did accept the review challenge, what would be the first thing I’d like to review? Without a second of hesitation my reply was a state-of-the-art headphone. Needless to say he was astonished since everyone at the table knew that in my long career in audio I was mostly involved in designing high- end loudspeakers. Their next question was simply, “Arnie, why headphones?” This mammoth elephant-sized headphone is even heavier than the LCD-2 which I didn’t think was possible. For creating music and other audio content, what you hear is what you got. These are completely transparent. The only potential gotcha is that nothing other than the most advanced speakers or other planar magnetic headphones can reproduce deep bass as flawlessly as these headphones do, and otherwise they are completely neutral and uncolored.

These professional, American-made planar magnetic LCD X headphones are extraordinary. These LCD-X have far better bass, more clarity and smoother response than any conventional headphones like the old-fashioned Sennheiser HD800. I’ve heard a lot about the old ones having a bad tuning or being “just off.” But, I personally loved the creamy softness with crazy open detail. It made for listening that was pleasurable but not fatiguing. The bass also just felt right. It seems to hit and rumble perfectly. Unique to Audeze, Fazor elements complement the magnetic structure by influencing sound waves. This enhanced control gives reduced distortion, better imaging, more accurate frequency extremes and an improved phase response. It’s this technology that makes the LCD-X amongst the most transparent-sounding headphones you can buy.
