Cappy is a magical creature who can take the form of other objects and beings. This simple notion allows Mario to transform into anything from an electrical current to a T-Rex. Super Mario Odyssey positions Mario’s hat as its own character. Yet, Cappy is a reflection of Mario’s legacy. This felt hat, no longer in production, is a potent symbol of an iconic videogame character.

In Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World, Mario and Luigi lose their caps in their Small forms. However, in the former game, once the player has 1,110 lives, their Super forms lose their caps instead. Due to a glitch, Mario will still lose health while speaking to NPCs and can even perform his death animation. However, the "Too Bad!" screen will not appear if this occurs, showing up only after Mario finishes talking to an NPC.
