The second standout was down to Brooks’ DNA Loft foam, which creates a much firmer landing than ‘marshmallow softness’ running shoes such as the Hoka Clifton 8. As mentioned, this is a daily trainer slightly on the heavier side, which isn’t built to encourage you to move at a high pace. So if you’re looking for shoes best for speed runs, this probably isn’t the one for you. Although a great shoe, and one I’ll continue to use, the shoe is not perfect. There are two main negatives that linger in my mind. The biggest issue for me was the 12mm drop. To explain further, the extra support won’t inhibit you if you don’t need it. At the same time, if your feet start to roll in further, the support guides your ankles and knees through a better path. In fact, Brooks’ research showed them that this style of support is the best way to reduce knee problems during running. As the support helps you when required, it works well for runners whose left and right legs move in distinct ways from one another. For example, you may only get one sore knee during a run.

DNA Loft cushioning is a staple for the Adrenaline GTS. Now, Brooks extended the soft foam from the heel all the way to the forefoot to maximize cushioning, making each stride buttery smooth. Add in BioMoGo DNA foam to the midsole for heightened responsiveness and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a balanced, smooth ride.

I joked with my running friends that they are my “dad shoes” because they look like a pair my dad would wear along with me now being the father of two little ones. However similar to the other issues that I experienced with this shoe, the breathability issue seemed to disappear as I wore the shoe in. The toe box also feels more comfortable now after a few miles, although I’d still prefer a bit more room for my toes to splay. The Landing The Adrenaline is built on tried and true technologies Brooks has tweaked every few years. The Adrenaline and its neutral counterpart the Ghost are Brooks best selling trainers. When these arrived I was excited to review them because I have never run in a pair of Adrenalines before. When I opened them up I was immediately impressed. One of two changes to version 21 is that the DNA Loft (Brooks’s highly aerated midsole foam) has been extended all the way through from heel to toe to give a slightly softer, bouncier ride. In truth, this change was barely noticed but that’s because this was already a supremely cushioned shoe that absolutely coddles your foot through the gait cycle – if you love a soft feel you’ll struggle to find better. Structured Upper

We also have Brooks Adrenaline GTS women’s and men’s varieties, so no matter who you’re shopping for, you’ll find something for them here. It is an adaptive system and only engages when you need support. This change was monumental at the time but now three years in and it is the norm. I knew from experience Brooks trainers take a little longer to break-in. The drop was also evident, it is a 12mm drop in both the mens and womens. If the shoes come from an official way, not some grey direct import from far east and they come from Brooks themselves this is absolute faking customers during the pandemic. They hope people can’t or will not return the online bought shoe. It was actually running on these uneven surfaces that I could really appreciate the GuideRails Technology. I’m a mild overpronator, and running on unpredictable surfaces often seems to make this worse, but my foot felt really stable and supported throughout.Blown rubber is found on the outsole of the Adrenaline. It is built to last hundreds of miles. Omega flex grooves are strategically placed on the outsole to give flexibility to the shoes.

The grip was definitely better on loose surfaces than it was on wet surfaces, but was pretty good on both. There is a reason it has the GTS (Go To Shoe) label. It is a simple, reliable, and highly enjoyable shoe to run in. The brand new Air Mesh upper with 3D Fit Print technology is specially engineered to hug the foot for a breathable, yet secure fit. Clean edges and sleek colorways keep this classic shoe looking timeless and fresh. The Brooks Adrenaline is celebrating its 21st birthday this year. This is quite the accomplishment given the constantly evolving nature of running shoes. Not many shoes out there can say they made it to their 20th edition. Fresh new colorways and cutting edge tech come together in the Adrenaline GTS 21 delivering the adaptive support and ideal softness you know and love. For those runners who are unfamiliar with the guide rail support system, you have two guide rails on both sides of the foot (a longer medial one, a shorter lateral one) that balance your foot as you run, similar to bumpers in bowling. Most of the immediate issues such as slightly rigid landing, limited breathability, and tightness in the forefoot began to disappear after 20 miles or so as I wore in the shoes and only got better from there. But for some runners, this is simply too long a wait to keep faith. The shoe hugged my foot nicely, with a super cozy upper, moderate but noticeable arch support, and a really comfortable padded heel counter with no slip issues.
