Kellerbier – Is a type of unfiltered and unpasteurised German lager. They’re subsequently cloudy in colour and possess a sweet, malty, almost bread-like flavour, due to the brewing yeast that remains in the beer. So how is Paulaner beer brewed? Like most beers, it starts with water, malted barley, hops, and yeast. Making beer involves several steps, including mashing, boiling, fermenting, and conditioning. One thing that sets Paulaner apart is the quality of the ingredients they use. They source their hops from the Hallertau region, which is known for producing some of the best hops in the world. They also use a special strain of yeast unique to their brewery, which gives their beer its distinctive taste. Fast forward to 2021 and the radler is having a moment, a moment that’s turning into momentum. Stiegl’s boldly colorful cans have spread, and the sales have lured breweries like Schöfferhoffer, Ottakringer, and even some big, recognizable names like Paulaner and Bitburger to test the radler waters in America.

Beerhunter offers a wide range of craft beers, and one of the most highly sought-after brands we carry is Paulaner. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the history of Paulaner, the different types of Paulaner beer, how it’s brewed, and its most famous product, the Paulaner Oktoberfest. History of Paulaner It’s six of one, half a dozen of the other,” says Fran Cattani, who imports the Ottakringer Radlers from Vienna for S&H Imports. “Shandy is soda and a beer, radler is more like a lemon soda, or lemonade, and beer.” Radlers are most often citrus-based, but Stiegl’s bringing a raspberry radler, and Schöfferhoffer has introduced a new passion fruit version. I also tend to think of a shandy as soda and beer, as opposed to a radler, which I think of as beer and soda. A thin difference, maybe, but it means something to me. The story goes that a large group of cyclists came to a traditional Bavarian Guesthouse in the small village of Deisenhofen, which is just outside of Munich. The problem was that Herr Kugler was (somehow) running short on beer that day (how does that even happen in Bavaria??), but God forbid he lose any business! So, he whipped up a special “Radlermaß” (A giant Maß/ Stein of Beer “Just for the cyclists”). He told them that it was perfect for bike riding, since it was much lower in alcohol content, so they would be safe to bike home! Dunkle Radler: You can now get a Dunkles Radler (half dark beer, half “lemonade”). Funny enough, as much as Dunkle beers remain my top choice of beer, I do not like a Dunkles Radler over a normal one! I don’t sell beers that are brewed using cheap ingredients to fit a low price strategy. For the breweries I work with it’s not about making cheap beer to sell to the masses. It’s about quality. But alas, I’ve come a long way and now, there is one German drink that you’ll find in my hand on a hot, summer day. A Radler! Here in Germany, it’s easy to just go buy a delicious bottle of this “German lemon beer” but in the US it’s a bit harder to come by. And no, it is NOT the same as a shandy! Well, if you are in the US, the best radler beer is honesly going to be one that you make yourself! It is fresh, bubbly, citrusy and PERFECT for hot, summer days!!! Kölsch – Similar to Champagne, Kölsch is a regionally protected beer variety, produced in and around the city of Cologne. Made using a combination of warm top fermentation and cold lagering techniques, a Kölsch is typically pale and light-bodied, with a very subtle hint of fermented fruitiness. In the Northern parts of Germany, a Radler is sometimes called “Alterwasser” and is more commonly made with a Pilsner style beer rather than a Helles (lager).

Is a radler the same thing as a shandy, as the British call the blend of beer and ginger ale that’s grown in popularity, particularly in the Caribbean? The grapefruit aroma was apparent, but so was the beer—I could smell clean malt, not just fruit. The first sip sold me. It was cold, of course, but there was a tart and refreshing grapefruit burst, along with a clean, smooth lager beer experience. I drank Stiegl the rest of the night, and the 2.0 percent ABV was a pleasant bonus. I felt great the next morning!

So, yup. Basically, a German Radler is just simply Beer and Sprite! Simple enough, right? Well…maybe….. What Beer To Use For a Radler? The “Radler” meaning is actually taken directly from the Bayerish word “Radler” which is actually, literally, a bicylist. I’d heard of radlers, but always as something they did in Germany. It was also something that didn’t appeal to me. If you can actually believe it, I wasn’t a beer drinker before moving to Germany. But what is an even odder twist of events is that the beer that I fell for first in Bavaria was a Dunkel (dark) beer….not even some “easier to drink” light beer. Nope, I headed straight for the liquid bread! of drinkers don’t have the palate to appreciate these beers. You’re here - we know you are more discerning than them. Well done for discovering Wee Beer Shop.
