The qualities that give it such a straightforward appearance are a nod to the watch’s military roots, but they’re also a great opportunity for Seiko to show off its ability to build an insanely high-quality watch and sell it for peanuts. Seiko’s exclusive 7S26 calibre automatic movement powers this watch, it consists of 21 jewels and it offers an accuracy of -20/+40 seconds per day. This watch has a water resistance of 30 metres, meaning it should only be exposed to light splashes of water. With a water resistance of 99ft, you can confidently even go swimming or snorkeling with your automatic without a care in the world.
That’s not at all what we have here, and though I’ve passed over it on my watch searches many times, I can say now that I’d give it more than a second glance if I see it again. I really like the calendar design, it blends in perfectly with the wrest of the dial. It’s just a standard date and day display but you can’t really expect anything more in this price range. More than happy with this. But the SNK809 continues to impress with its solid build that rivals far more expensive timepieces. It has nice weight to it and feels great on the wrist. The SNK809 has a mass-produced movement, but it’s Seiko’s in-house 7S26 automatic movement with 21 jewels and a 40-hour power reserve. The SNK809 carries a military vibe overall that lands somewhere between a classic pilot’s watch and a rugged field watch, though the dial markings tilt further in the pilot direction.
Background/History
We didn’t say all of that as a suggestion that Seiko should have fitted a bracelet to the SNK809. Budget watches can be great at many things, but bracelets at the lowest price point can feel like they’re made out of tweezers.
The Seiko 5 SNK809 may be the best automatic watch on the market in this price range. It is a stylish, sleek, and well-respected timepiece that is long-lasting, durable, and comfortable to wear. Not suitable for showering, bathing, swimming, snorkelling, water related work and fishing.’ The thing with water resistance testing is that it’s done in a still environment with no added pressure. After a few days of wear, it becomes softer and more comfortable, but it’s worth looking at an affordable replacement. The good news is that the SNK809 looks great on a variety of straps, including rubber and leather watch straps. A rubber strap looks great too, and it’s very comfy. The movement has an industrial and tool-like look and finish to it which of course goes well with the personality and ethos of this watch. Now, if you’re blessed with extra-large hands or forearms, you might find the standard 37mm case a bit tiny. But the guys at Seiko understand that yes, you never miss forearm day in the gym, and they’ve come up with the 42mm SNZG15. The indices have lumed dots on their outer edge, and their placement on the outside of the dial means there’s room for the date window and a lume dot for better nighttime visibility. It seems that few watches are as fondly regarded as the humble Seiko 5 SNK809. Many watch enthusiasts can claim the SNK809 as their first mechanical watch. Often, it’s the watch that started them in the hobby of watch collecting. Owning this little Seiko 5 almost seems like a rite of passage, of sorts.
As is typical of most automatic movements, once you stop wearing it for a day or so it will run out of power. You’ll simply need to give it a starting wind to get going and adjust the time when you next use it. Overall I highly recommend the Seiko SNK809, and it deserves it. We took a look at some of the watches benefits and highlighted some of the negatives associated with it but I feel it still whole heartedly deserves the 9/10 that we’ve awarded it. Leather strap watches tend to fit without a problem for most wearers. However, watches fitted with metal bracelets often need adjusting to get the perfect fit. The watch has a water resistance of 30m. Note that this is at static pressure, which means you won’t be able to take it diving down to 30 meters. The watch is built to handle splashes of water and submerging over short periods of time. Owners have reported going swimming with the watch without it leaking any water, but we would advise not to if you want to be on the safe side. The water resistance isn’t the most impressive, but remember this is an everyday field watch and not a dive watch. But one person will undoubtedly have a "My watch leaked" story, it has to happen to someone at sometime. The case diameter is 36mm so it’s fairly smaller than these 42mm watches you see around. So for people who’ve had enough of large watches not sitting right for them, give this watch a chance.It’s safe to say that the Seiko 5 SNK809 isn’t one of the most stunning looking watches. I don’t think I’d wear it to any serious formal occasions myself, but I would be more than happy to wear it as a day to day watch.
