Due to rum's global production, there are no set standards for its production. This can lead to some difficult choices, particularly when it comes to aged or gold rums.

It's typical to pay more for an older rum, but not all rums require the same amount of time in the barrel. Climate plays a large role in aging times. For instance, the Caribbean's warm, humid climate can make a rum in just a few years that tastes similar to an American rum that has been aged for a decade or more. Similar to whiskey, when a blended rum states a year on the label, it is referring to the youngest rum in the blend.What makes this a little disappointing is that the flavors don’t necessarily deliver on the aromas we were promised. I get a lot of darker flavors — coffee, burned sugar, dark caramel, toffee — but only a hint of the fruits. There’s the pineapple, banana, and over-ripe mango in there, but not at the same level of intensity as with the aroma. The coffee provides a touch of bitterness that is a little off-putting, but hopefully will get toned down shortly. On Ice Owned by the Sazerac Company, Myers’s Rum uses 100% molasses [ 1] from Jamaica, fermented, then distilled and aged using white oak barrels. According to one source Myers’s Rum is an extremely popular dark rum in NAAFI’s (Naval, Army and Air Force Institutes) across the world. I wonder how much of this is the Navy. In many ways Myers’s would make a good substitute for a Navy Rum.
