Description

Since Cerenia has not been studied in very young dogs or cats, or in pregnant or lactating bitches or queens, use of Cerenia in these animals should be discussed with your veterinarian. Cerenia tablets should be administered once daily, at a dose of 8 mg maropitant per kg bodyweight, using the numbers of tablets given in the table below. Tablets are breakable along the score line on the tablet.

Maropitant is metabolised in the liver and therefore should be used with caution in dogs and cats with liver disease. Cerenia should be used with caution in animals suffering from or with predisposition for heart diseases. It was approved by the FDA in the United States in 2007 for use in dogs, then in 2012 for cats. Cerenia is now widely used for cats in veterinary clinics around the world. How Cerenia Works Methimazole (for hyperthyroidism) seems to be one of the few drugs with strong evidence to support its efficacy.

Half tablets should be stored for a maximum of two days after removal from the blister. Half-tablets should be returned to the opened blister and kept within the cardboard outer.Maropitant is metabolised in the liver and therefore should be used with caution in dogs with liver disease. As maropitant is accumulated in the body during a 14-day treatment period due to metabolic saturation, careful monitoring of liver function should be implemented during long term treatment. Additionally, special editions of the book, commissioned by AMTRA, will be available shortly for its RAMA-SQPs.

Further information on the Code of Practice for the Promotion of Animal Medicines can be found at http://www.noah.co.uk/services/our-code-of-practice/ Cerenia should be used with caution in animals suffering from or with a predisposition for heart diseases. Cerenia should not be used concomitantly with Ca-channel antagonists as maropitant has affinity to Ca-channels. In cats, moderate to severe response to injection is very commonly observed (in approximately one third of cats). The solution for injection contains 10 mg maropitant per ml as maropitant citrate monohydrate as a clear, colourless to light yellow solution. The bioequivalence studies showed that giving the injection under the skin produced the same levels of maropitant in the body as giving the injection into a vein.Cerenia is a protein-bound drug, and its use at the same time as other protein-bound drugs has not been studied. Such drugs include NSAIDs, cardiac and anticonvulsant medications. For this reason, cats that are being given such medications concurrently should be monitored particularly closely. Risk Factors I asked my vet about trying a combo of Cerenia and low dose Gabapentin. She agreed that this was reasonable and we tried it. I kept these on hand – and it has been miraculous in making these flare-ups of much shorter duration. After some reading, my understanding is that Cerenia by itself appears to have some anti-inflammatory properties when given to cats. I imagine that’s a pretty good bonus when dealing with idiopathic pancreatitis.

The efficacy of Cerenia in reduction of nausea in cats was demonstrated in studies using a model (xylazine-induced nausea). The safety of Cerenia has not been established in dogs less than 8 weeks of age, or in cats less than 16 weeks of age, and in pregnant or lactating dogs and cats. The responsible veterinarian should make a benefit-risk assessment before using Cerenia in dogs less than 8 weeks of age, or in cats less than 16 weeks of age, or in pregnant or lactating bitches and cats. Some owners may experience allergic skin reactions themselves due to topical exposure to the drug after handling tablets, perhaps associated with skin sensitization, so it’s advised that people should wash their hands after administering tablets to their pets. Drug Interactions For the prevention and treatment of vomiting, in conjunction with Cerenia solution for injection and in combination with other supportive measures. Cerenia tablets are effective in the treatment of vomiting, however in cases of frequent vomiting it is recommended to initiate treatment with Cerenia Solution for Injection.NOAH’s responsible use of animal medicines information can be found at noah.co.uk/topics/environment-and-sustainability/responsible-use-of-animal-medicines/ The NOAH Compendium App has been fully updated to mirror the 2019 edition of the NOAH Compendium of Data Sheets for Animal Medicines, which just been published with a free copy posted to every veterinary practice in the UK. Clinical signs including vomiting on first administration, excess salivation and watery faeces have been observed when the product has been overdosed in excess of 20 mg/kg. The active substance in Cerenia, maropitant, is broken down in the liver and therefore it is recommended to be used with caution in animals with liver disease. Since maropitant could affect heart activity, Cerenia should be used with caution in animals with certain heart conditions.
