For all he knows, this might be his only opportunity (for the next four years or so, at least) to watch seabirds at close quarters. On these occasions, we try to take time out and swap roles to make sure staff are looking after themselves too. Although he often did not appear to notice Lucy-Ann and did not even speak to her for some time, he was never impatient with her, never irritable or cross. They help us know which pages are the most and least popular and see how visitors move around the site. But in between, plain old baby wipes and this awesome spray keep her smelling so fresh and so clean, clean.

It shows the impact that dialysis can have on everyday family life but, more importantly, how a loving, supporting environment can help overcome a chronic illness.Philip realises in Island how much Jack cares for his sister in his own quiet way, even if birds do come first!

He is crazy about seabirds but we're told near the beginning of The Island of Adventure that he has only seen the sea once before: "'I can smell the sea already,' said Jack, who had only once before been to the sea, and scarcely remembered it. As for Jack, he probably hasn't had anyone to share or encourage him in his love of birds, either - it has largely been a solitary hobby and (until he meets Philip and Dinah) has probably consisted mainly of watching garden birds and gleaning information about more exotic species from books. It would have most certainly been hard for both of them through the time of their parents death, and seeing Lucy-Ann had no mother and father for comfort, I would have assumed Jack would have spent additional time with his sister, and been even more comforting and kind as a brother with parents. and so the brother and sister normally stay in Lippinton with their Uncle Geoffrey and his housekeeper, both of whom (according to Lucy-Ann) hate it when the kids are home for the holidays. I think teasing someone because of their lack of academic abilities is spiteful (yes I know it's only a book). She says she's been without him all through the school term and doesn't want to be without him during the holidays too.

As for our single parent household that was once pretty harmonious and chill — it got a little more tense and loud. For years he must have felt responsible for Lucy-Ann as their treatment by his aged uncle and the housekeeper was not good. As much as possible we will try to keep a child’s routine from home, but always with a little bit of added ‘magic’ and extra fun along the way!

Through the assemblage of these basic components, Gabby creates vividly imagined characters that mimic or embellish creatures found in the natural world. The truth is, I want another baby and I would have one solo, but it’s a financial responsibility I can’t swing right now. It's funny to note the difference in opinion of other readers; for instance, one says "she's so sweet, and just dotes on her older brother" while another says "what an annoying little drip Lucy-Ann is! And then there's Bill Smugs, who first turns up in The Island of Adventure a mile and half along the beach, where he seems to be spending a little time camped out in an old shack beneath a cliff, with his boat moored a little way out. Also, although perhaps she is more loving towards Jack, than he realises, I think he could have put his love for birds aside a little more for Lucy-Ann, considering their circumstances. For a child who wants a sibling and a parent who knows that isn’t going to happen, this is a fun alternative.
