Description

She is alone in the mansion during a snow storm and a total blackout but is able to find her way around this massive cavern of a house with the aid of a candle (which she miraculously finds a match to light it). Even though her very resemblance is found in many of the statues from the time period, including some at the Frick household, she is trying to be incognito as Helen's secretary. That's where she met Joshua and where they worked together on a scavenger hunt that was decades old and was a hunt devised by Helen Frick for her suitor.

For example, when she somehow gets tied into her landlord's homicide case, she runs from police instead of subjecting herself to the questioning. But the longer she works as a private secretary to Helen Frick, the daughter of industrialist and art patron Henry Clay Frick, the more deeply shes pulled into a tangled web of romantic trysts, stolen jewels, and family drama.

I thought the 1966 story line was boring AF and I didn't care for some of the overly forced narratives. She lands a plum assignment that has her in America in 1966 doing a photoshoot for Vogue at the Frick Museum.

It serves as a split screen depicting those who held on covetously to the past and those who blindly chased the future.

Two windows looked out on the dreary courtyard in the back, the black metal of the fire escape glinting in the late-summer sun. The interesting mystery thread started a bit late in the narrative for my taste, so I can only express my disappointment in the early pacing. The story is told in two timelines- one in 1919 following a young woman who has been a popular muse for sculptors and artists, who ends up hiding out from the police as personal secretary to one of the Frick family. Austen's enduring appeal and widespread influence can be found in our previews and reviews of the best novels, nonfiction books, and British period dramas. Nearly fifty years later, mod English model Veronica Weber has her own chance to make her career - and with it, earn the money she needs to support her family back home - within the walls of the former Frick residence, now converted into one of New York City's most impressive museums.
