There were so many things I loved about this book and I particularly enjoyed the sense of sisterhood between Ariadne and Phaedra. As I was combing through my little sister’s silken tresses, a gift we shared from our radiant mother, I began to weep, fearfully regarding each golden curl as bait to those divine colossi that strode the heavens and could snatch up our tiny triumphs and rub them into dust between their immortal fingers. Saint definitely went the Greek tragedy route, without modernizing this story, telling a different version, or fleshing it out enough. The union was the forbidden subject of gossip on Crete, but whispers of it reached me, snaking around me in tendrils of malice and mockery. Ariadne gives a voice to the forgotten women of one of the most famous Greek myths, and speaks to their strength in the face of angry, petulant Gods. But helping Theseus kill the monster means betraying her family and country, and Ariadne knows only too well that in a world ruled by mercurial gods – drawing their attention can cost you everything.As Ariadne’s part in the cult of Dionysius is virtually removed in this novel, there isn’t exactly that much for her to do. It glistened in the sunlight, so rich and burnished that I thought the minute drops of honey would melt and slide away in the heat.
