The rats of NIMH come up with a brilliant solution to Mrs Frisby's problem but the rats are in danger too, and little by little Mrs Frisby discovers their extraordinary past . We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. I read this book as possibly a 10 year old and have never forgotten the rats, in the story-within-the story in the middle, learning to read the instructions inside their cages that led to their *SPOILER ALERT!

I approached this with the usual trepidation you get when going back to a childhood favourite after nearly four decades away. My only critique would be that given the large cast of rodents (and birds) in such a small book, I was given just enough plot cheese to nibble on without ever really feeling full on complete character development. The science aspect is interesting and makes the animal characters even more realistic and memorable. Surprisingly thoughtful book about education, ethics, community and obligations to ourselves, our family, our tribe, and the larger world. It helps that I am a devoted rat-dad, but I'd recommend it even for those who still harbor prejudices against these noble creatures.

The second complaint is that I'm not super happy that we don't know what happened to Justin the Rat either. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH "reflect the many scientific and technological anxieties present in 1960s American culture". We also have the occasional misfortune of horse-flies in the summertime and the rare autumn visit of a mouse who makes it past the notice of our savage (and somehow still fabulous) cat. The story has aged really well because there isn't anything to date it, like mentioning popular fashion choices of the time, so really anyone can read it.It's hard to imagine anyone not being moved by "The Rats of Nimh" and its characters are well-developed and not easily forgotten. Out of respect for Jonathan, the rats agree to move Frisby's house to a location safe from the plow. I think it was my second-grade teacher who read this to us in class, like a chapter a day, or something. As an adult I appreciate the fact that the book is about a parent that is sacrificing to save her children instead of the standard children’s book that is about children needing to take care of themselves because the adults around them are unable to protect them.
