Her support is much needed as the evidence piles up quickly, one of the girls turns up dead, and Stephen Bates is arrested for the crimes.

The book concentrates partly on his relationship with Helen and the progress of the ongoing investigation as seen from the outside, something we rarely see.

This is the 13th book in Mark Billingham's series featuring his tough as old boots detective, Tom Thorne - I've not read the entire series but after really enjoying the previous book in the series, The Bones Beneath (review HERE) I felt the immediate need for more Thorne and so I started on Time of Death. But their peace is shattered when they learn that two girls have been abducted in the Warwickshire village of Polesford and a local man has been arrested, refusing to reveal their whereabouts. As you read chapter after chapter you will keep asking your self again and again who do you believe.

As his partner faces up to a past she has tried desperately to forget and a media storm engulfs the town, Thorne becomes convinced that, despite overwhelming evidence of his guilt, the police have got the wrong man. She's either withdrawn or spoiling for a fight, leaving Tom baffled as to the cause of her behaviour.

This series is going from strength to strength and already I am looking forward to the next instalment. Having been a Tom Thorne fanatic since day 1, most of the series having been read at least twice, I found it very hard to believe that Tom wouldn't challenge her on her odd behaviour. This was different to the standard Thorne books as for the first part, he is little more than a bystander, supporting Helen who has a much bigger part to play in this book.

I love the characters of Helen, Thorne and Hendricks and have become very comfortable with these characters, their banter, their humour, sarcasm and intelligence…the dialogue is exceptionally natural and believable and the characters develop and grow with each new novel. This is a great example of the strength of the characterisation and plot that this author produces and is reads successfully as stand-alone novel. The plot element on which this gruesome mystery turns is certainly one of the cleverest and most satisfying that I've read for ages. With a girl still missing, Thorne sets himself on a collision course with local police, townsfolk and a merciless killer. Now the unspoken rule with crime books is that the author can't just pluck the guilty party out of thin air at the end of the book, the reader must have met the guilty party during the narrative, and using this logic I figured I sussed it all out by the mid-way point.

This book has quite a lot of love in it, the characters are very close and very connected, They care about each other. Detectives Tom Thorne and Helen Weekes (his girlfriend) are holidaying in the Cotswolds when news comes through that the husband of an old friend of hers, Linda Bates, has been arrested on suspicion of the kidnap and murder of two young girls in the fictional towns of Dorbrook and Polesford in Warwickshire. As the local police have no interest in alternate theories or suspects, he looks into the crimes himself - and the further he investigates, the more it looks as though Bates has been expertly framed. At first reluctant, Thorne soon finds himself interested in the investigation and at odds with the local police. It is always a joy to see a 'new' Tom Thorne on the bookshelves and as ever this lived up to expectations. Billingham combines black humour, stoic cynicism and seemingly effortless intrigue once again and the end result is that Time of Death is one of the most addictive and compelling Tom Thorne novels yet ( ABC Online ) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
