About this deal

Naledi and Tiro are exposed to the fear of violence for “non whites” underlying the discrimination when they unknowingly attempt to board a bus for white people and witness a pass raid at a train station where they see the cruel treatment of black people at the hands of the police.

Grace helps them find their mother’s workplace and offers them a place to spend the night in Soweto. Set against the dangerous landscape of apartheid South Africa, JOURNEY TO JO'BURG is the inspiring story of two brave children who will do anything to save their little sister. Ah, I went to Oxfam again yesterday and got Born A Crime, Trevor Noah (3 euro, excellent condition). It seems clear that the point of the novel is to point up some of the major problems with apartheid, but at the same time it seems to downplay those problems too much. The children's mother, Mma, lives and works in Johannesburg most of the year because it is the only place where she can find work to support her children.I stopped and went on Wikipedia (my go-to source on almost everything) to see what the deal with Jo'burg is (it is Johannesburg indeed! But it's worth all the extra work because the story has so much depth and complexity and kids will enjoy learning and talking about this.

They have to stay with their new friend for the night, then travel back with their mother the next day. I loved this story and read it to my children who now understand a bit more of SA history through a lived personal story they can identify with. In a social studies or history class, Journey to Jo’Burg could be used to compare and contrast the history of South Africa with that of the U. As Mma is preparing to go back to Jo'burg, Naledi is happy that she was able to save her sister's life and for all that she learned on her journey.Book reviews cover the content, themes and worldviews of fiction books, not their literary merit, and equip parents to decide whether a book is appropriate for their children.
