We have cowering, plotting nobility and priests being cajoled in to following the wishes of the new regime. Desmoulins, though, is more heterosexual than otherwise and has many affairs with women, most of which, we are led to understand, are nothing but distractions to him and do not mean much.

As I said, the book starts with each of the three main characters’ childhoods and continues through their early careers as lawyers in the early 1780s, and then through the Revolution. The one disadvantage of reading a very long book on an e-reader is the inability to easily flick back through the pages, which meant that after that first eye-glazing encounter with the character list, I didn’t consult it again.Three wishes, Jean-Nicolas thought sourly: become an alderman, marry your cousin, prosper like a pig in clover. She cleverly deals with conversations and brings wit and ridicule into events , especially when dealing with the brilliant and eccentric Camille. When she sat at her father's table and could not eat, she shoveled the food down to the terrier who sat by her skirts. At the same time Mantel never tries to deceive the reader, she points up her modern idiom, openly admits that Danton never wrote anything down, but slyly asks if perhaps we can hear his voice nevertheless and then provides us with that voice, makes use of documents and original sources, and then juxtaposes them with conversations between two characters that of course can only be imagined. In Mantel’s version of events, he is bisexual, but I do not know whether this is true of the real Desmoulins or not.

It took me about 5 weeks to actually make a start on the reading – partly down to having exams and partly because of the size of it. When he had first arrived he had been told that he would want to work hard, for the Abbot's sake, since it was to the Abbot he owed this great opportunity. She also wrote A Change of Climate, A Place of Greater Safety, Eight Months on Ghazzah Street, An Experiment in Love, The Giant, O'Brien, Fludd, Beyond Black, Every Day Is Mother's Day, Vacant Possession, and a memoir, Giving Up the Ghost.I wrote a letter to an agent saying would you look at my book, it’s about the French Revolution, it’s not a historical romance, and the letter came back saying, we do not take historical romances [. JULES MICHELET CHAPTER 1 Life as a Battlefield N ow that the dust has settled, we can begin to look at our situation. A Place of Greater Safety opens before the French Revolution and Mantel takes us right up to the execution of her three main characters; Danton, Robespierre and Desmoulins who played a central role in the revolution and are corrupted by greed and power. I came to this extremely long novel not because I had any particular interest in the French Revolution, but because I fell in love with Mantel’s writing in Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies and wanted to read more of her work. We have casual talk of murders and loss of life, the immorality of the situation of a country besieged from all sides and almost bankrupt, generals being replaced at breathtaking pace and a lack of clear predefined plans.

In the Cromwell novels, Mantel funnels everything through Cromwell's POV; here, we're endlessly shifting, a habit I decry in many novels but Mantel pulls it off. I’m not at all sure that I can even begin to do justice to Hilary Mantel’s great sprawling novel about the French Revolution. It is not until the elections to the National Convention in 1792 that all three become representatives in the legislative body.

It would be almost impossible to read a novel as long as A Place of Greater Safety and not get some idea of the setting. As a young man, Desmoulins falls in love with Annette, the mother, who refuses to have sexual relations with him.

From the very beginning, Danton has a strong desire for money, unlike Desmoulins, who is content to be a struggling young lawyer until the events of the Revolution overtake him. Supposedly, the twelve members are equals, but Robespierre becomes their clear leader, at least for a while. There were two dogs running after him with their tails between their legs; trailing behind came Anne-Madeleine, bawling with rage and despair.we find ourself not observing over someone's shoulder but straight through the fourth wall into the "I" of Danton. He feared, in his secret heart, that one day in company the baby would sit up and speak; that it would engage his eyes, appraise him and say, "You prick. This is a book in which the pleasures are all intellectual, even textual, lying not so much in the story as in the way it is told. Ultimately, without the need for heightened drama – she doesn’t even depict the death of Robespierre.
