But you’re also using these very same tokens to mark the star systems that you’re controlling, which means that the more systems you own, the fewer tokens you have for actions before they start getting reeeally expensive at which point you’d better hope that your economy is strong enough to cope with this level of spending and what’s this? Whereas TI4 has a pre-defined tech tree, Eclipse offers a significantly more granular experience with players fine-tuning their ship blueprints to optimize speed, strength and/or resilience in combat as well as a multitude of of infrastructure advances.

The dice holders did not hold the dice neatly as seen in the content description and the dice colors did not match (The rulebook may have been shown the 1st edition of Eclipse 2nd Dawn). The fiddliest components – the tech and point tiles – just get chucked into a cloth bag at the end of the game that they’ll be drawn out of when needed next time. Eridani start with a ton of money and can put together five or six action turns early while people are scraping along with only two actions, Draco is the only faction that can co-exist with the NPCs on the board, and the Mechanema leverage their industrious specialization to pump out cheaper ships in higher quantities. Then the upkeep phase will occur in which players will gain some tech and building points and have to manage their money income. What this means is that sometimes forcing it into place causes the tray to bounce a little, which can be enough to bump your population cubes off of their designated slots in the tray, which means you may end up losing track of how many resources you will garnish at the end of your turn if not careful.

I never felt like I was bored and the downtime isn’t that bad since each player only has a single action to take.

What this means is that you might not ever connect paths between players if you choose to not explore specific pathways.Your opponents are expanding towards you and you need to upgrade your fleet but you absolutely need to place that economy cube or you’re looking at bankruptcy, so you’ll need to spend influence over there and… well… this is where the complexity comes in.
