At the time, Brunetti had suspected this would not suffice, and eventually it had not: the time had come for The Cull. At a dinner party given by his parents-in-law, Brunetti meets Franca Marinello, the wife of a prosperous Venetian businessman. Inspection of his small residence confirmed this as Brunetti did not find much more than a small statue of Buddha that he worshipped at and a number of novels, mostly crime fiction. Bert’s son Aaron thinks his mother, Verity, killed Bert, who has a very shady past, with plenty of affairs with other women.

It’s a long and narrow island (11 km long, and 25 to 210 metres wide) that separates the Venetian Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea. Please remember it can take some time for your bank or credit card company to process and post the refund too. A heart attack seems the likely cause, but Brunetti is not so sure and decides to take a closer look. Brunetti soon realises why he remembers the dead man, and asks Signorina Elettra if she can help him find footage of a farmers’ protest the previous autumn. The Commissario's investigation makes important connections between the past and present, and eventually reveals a shocking motive for Kavinda's murder.I also find the theatrical elements of this series fascinating and much prefer the fact that they are written in the past tense. As a long-time fan of Leon and Brunetti, this series has been tailing off, but there are still pleasures to be had in the company of characters who feel like old friends: Guido and his adorable family, the divine Signorina Elettra and the others. Despite the rain and cold, Brunetti chose to walk: the vaporetti would be overheated and crowded in weather like this. Sadly, about half way through the story gets overly complicated with the introduction of several characters.

They’re sure the answers must lie in Bert’s dark past and in the glamorous, occasionally deadly, days of Music Hall. This time around there is little of the domestic as the concentration is the focus on the death of a Sri Lankan man. The attack, in the beautiful palazzo home of Flavia Petrelli, reigning diva of La Scala, had come with a message: ‘Don’t keep that appointment with Dottor Semenzato. There’s a lot going on as both Edgar’s team and Emma and Sam investigate Bert’s death, at first in competition and then they combine forces.
