The quality of the writing and playing on this album make it an absolute standout album of 2022 for me. David Longdon – Vocals, Acoustic and Electric Guitars, Mandolin, Keyboard Programming, Piano, Stylophone, Percussion. Forgive (But Not Forget)” is another great one; it is something of a ballad with lots of space for David to emote and hurt. The thoughts he wanted to leave for his fans, friends, former band mates, his wife and society in general are somber and inner reflective. There’s No Ghost Like An Old Ghost” is next, kicking off with Jeremy Stacey’s drums, a highlight of many tracks on this album.

This one has a funky edge, powered along by electric piano, with some clavinet and Travis’s sax joining towards the end of the track. Following on from the themes of relationships ending, this song is about “what to hang on to, and what to let go”. The cathartic lyrical arc here draws on some liberating hypnotherapy sessions Longdon had to treat his fear of flying, set to a strident, proggy, beautifully paced musical backdrop.Finishing the album was a balancing act of me trying to honour what we had been talking about but without his ears to say ‘Yes, I like that’ or not. Right from the opener “Into the Icehouse” with its cinematic music, you can tell that David was trying to do something new. And perhaps here it’s hardest to separate Door One – with all its heart, soul, love, vitriol, humour and wisdom – from its sad, posthumous circumstances. Album bello, ispirato, complesso ma accessibile, la cui qualità riprodotta sul vinile (nero, naturalmente) è ineccepibile e di gran resa sonora.

So from the tragedy of David’s death, we can find hope and purpose and celebrate his memory with this fine collection of songs. Door One, David Longdon’s posthumous solo album, is out now on CD and white and black vinyl editions. Rock doesn’t need saving in 2024, but it’s nice to be reminded just how thrilling and relatable three chords and the truth can still be. Starting with the sounds of nature, which lead to some quite dark and ominous music and the sound of footsteps – it conjures in my mind a Twin Peaks soundtrack type atmosphere. The epic track ‘The Letting Go’ is simply one of the best pieces of music I’ve ever heard - by anyone … ever; full of atmosphere and meaning with a beautiful soundscape. The jazz tones are supported by a fantastic saxophone solo by Theo Travis before everything shifts, around the halfway mark, into a different piano-led groove which brings a more optimistic tone: “You don’t have to let the fear of letting go keep you from embracing change”. In doing so David achieved two things: getting the album across the line but sadly posthumously, aided by friends and colleagues keen to ensure the world heard what David wanted to say. The final track, Love Is All, is a far gentler piece as David exorts us that love is all that matters and, indeed, it does matter and if you find it then work hard for it, treasure and guard it as love is precious and vital to us all.

David was a massively creative force of nature when it came to music, and I hope that he would have been happy with the choices that we made .Perhaps surprisingly for an album made by someone known mainly as a Lead Singer, the album opens with an atmospheric instrumental – and that’s absolutely as it should be; because David’s talents were much broader than that of a frontman. Completed by a working party of musicians closest to the multi-instrumentalist, spear-headed by co-producer/engineer, Patrick Phillips (Kate Bush, Van Morrison, Goldfrapp, Ludovico Einaudi).
