Description

According to Rowland, "Most encounters in the city are potentially lethal, several being no-win situations where the best outcome involves injury or loss of money.

Entering the first house I came to, I met a man who made a deal with me – swallow one of his pills of unlabeled medication. This is one of the few Fighting Fantasy books where it's quite easy to find everything you need for a successful completion as long as you explore thoroughly. Lediglich das Ende fand ich eher mau: Die Gegner sind plötzlich knüppelhart und ich bin nicht hardcore genug, um wegen ein bisschen Würfelpech am Schluss das ganze Ding nochmal von vorne durchzurauschen. In City of Thieves, you are a hearty adventurer who wanders into the town of Silverton, which is beset by attacks from the villanous Zanzar Bone. The worst idea in the book - and possibly in any FF book ever - comes right at the very end, where you have to make a choice out of three. The paragraphs with a full page illustration were: 1, 17, 27, 31, 40, 62, 80, 88, 113, 135, 148, 171, 178, 182, 203, 224, 239, 250, 265, 271, 292, 307, 319, 329, 344, 349, 356, 370, 385 and 398. All in all though, not really upset,I mean how could you be with such a great Gamebook as City of Thieves. One of the characters in the book, a Troll named Sourbelly [3] who was one of the city guards and partnered Fatnose, [4] is mentioned again in Deathtrap Dungeon when the hero encounters the female Troll, Ivy. I think I must have bought a larger backpack too, because I would soon be carrying a great number of items.

If you have never experienced a Fighting Fantasy book before, expect a challenging adventure fraught with peril, puzzles and peculiar enemies at every turn. The puzzle aspect is interesting enough to hold the interest of adults (my mother borrowed it for about a week in the 80s, until she had solved it) as well as the younger target audience. One could suggest that this is another assassination job, though it is clear that Bone is a bully and needs to be taught a lesson, and of course you are the one who has to teach him a lesson. In 1995 he led the merger of computer games company Domark with Eidos, the name behind the Tomb Raider computer games, where he is now Creative Director.
