This a loose retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and the author does a good job of being faithful to that story. This is fantasy book that has some romantic elements and those elements are really only there to further the plot. The trouble was this was all supposed to be the book's climax, and I was just getting antsy and impatient. I knew going into this book that it was a loose Pride and Prejudice retelling but I forgot until I was halfway through the book which caused me to get a little impatient with the pace of Elle's thinking.

Ok, here’s the deal…I generally liked the book, so maybe more than 3 stars, and I know it’s YA, so I also understand the general angstiness of the female protagonist, but OMG!As a mystery, the murder/resurrection plot didn't work great, because (since it was a retelling) I knew who the real douchebag was the whole time. This book definitely lived up to the expectations that I created after watching all of Rachel's marketing reels (if you do not follow her on Instagram, please do). To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. She is convinced that her plan will work, but what she wasn't counting with was falling for her husband.

I also really enjoyed seeing how Elle grapples with being accepted by the land to wield the power Fitz has bestowed on her. Cause, sometimes it seemed to be very extravagant (like, faes could hear everything from very far away and other times it seemed like they didn't), but it wasn't a big deal to me. Nevertheless, this didn't detract too much from my enjoyment of the book, since those are very common character traits - it just didn't add to them either. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages.

The plot had some nice twists and revelations, and even if I saw a couple coming, the emotion of those scenes was engaging. It times this meant that I was kind of frustrated with Elle, because the actual villain was RIGHT THERE and I get that she doubted Fitz more easily because Reid was her family's friend and a human to boot. When I first found this book and saw it described as a "loose retelling of Pride and Prejudice in a Gothic Fae setting", I thought that this sounded like it would be a perfect read for someone like me that loves both the world of fantasy and all things Austen-inspired. I think what I appreciated most about this though was that it touched on some of the more vital themes from the original. Highly recommend to any Austen lovers who also enjoy fantasy, mystery, and love a swoony romance without all the spice!

I enjoyed the Victorian/fae aspect and I thought that had been really well done, however I wasn't the greatest fan of Elle, the main character. Fitz is absolutely murderous, both figuratively and literally, when it comes to protecting those he cares about, including his new wife and soon to be queen. I really enjoyed the beginning of the book and the set up, the middle lagged for me in bits, and the end felt wrapped up pretty quickly for a short book. I thought her dedication to her family and uncovering the truth was very well done, and were good characteristics for her.Slown burn full of tension and angst had me turning the pages quickly to find out what would happen next, not only with the mystery, but for their relationship too. As any good character inspired by Darcy should be, Fitz is equal parts broody and devotedly fierce to the ones he loves.
