I had tried the Tone City Comp Engine but that simply didn't seem to have much effect on the signal. The MXR Dyna Comp Deluxe is a new, upgraded version of the hugely popular Dyna Comp compressor pedal. I used specific settings for each kind of tone that can serve as a guideline, but it is best to work with the sensitivity with each tone you are using.

For example, I remember having a Boss compressor that seemed to produce a comparable level of noise. You'll probably set the Output at about 3 o'clock and forget about it, and then all you have available is the Sensitivity to play with (I go for 9 o'clock as an always-on setting, and sometimes ramp it up for specific purposes), but it just works and sounds great. The Dyna Comp is also famous for its use by David Gilmour on numerous Pink Floyd tracks recorded during the late ’70s, as the pedal was a key element of his Strat’s sweet, singing sustain when used in conjunction with a Big Muff or other distortion/ overdrive pedal. I should also mention that there’s also a small ‘attack’ button which, when engaged, increases the speed with which the compressor captures and squashes your signal. I have mixed feelings about compressors, at some points they’ve been integral to my rig and at other times I’ve totally rejected them.

Its "thickening" effect is especially appreciated in Nashville, where many country music guitar players who use Fender Telecasters use it to thicken the otherwise thin sound of the single-coil guitar; besides, the compressor's lessening of the initial attack "gives the effect of a pedal steel player working his volume pedal". Funk rhythm players appreciated the consistency maintained between pick attack “chuks”, chords and single-note lines as well as the even balance of each note in chords. So if you want to advance your sound quality, then this little red thing is for you - solid and characteristic! It also fattens up the sound, giving more body and sustain to lead guitar lines, and can be used as a booster.

With the Dyna Comp Deluxe, you get the same great compression sound that’s been a gigging guitarist staple for years but with new features that let you really tailor your output to perfection. By turning the Tone control, you can really fine your compressed signal to add that extra bit of polish to your sound.During the ’70s, country guitarists embraced the Dyna Comp because its fast attack accentuates the pluck and cluck of chicken pickin’ licks, and its long release adds body to sustained notes in pedal steel bends. The point i'm trying to express is that the dynacomp "boosts" the overall tone and for it to boost the tone you need to have a tone.

Please give us the reason for your assessment in the following text box and – if possible – your e-mail address for further questions. To my ears it sounds like a classic Dyna Comp in that it’s a pretty unsubtle compressor that gives your tone an added fatness and significantly increases the sustain.Set and forget squash that used to be one of the few pedals I couldn't do without in the recording studio. The M102 Dyna Comp is a compressor that allows you to set an output level and the sensitivity at which it kicks in. I decided to experiment with the Dyna Comp to understand how its unique compression impacts midrange, and overdrive tones to show that it can make a difference no matter how you use it. Whether it’s adding clarity to open chords, cleaning up muddiness and adding subtle tightness to crunch, making the low end of high-gain power chords subtly bolder, or adding a tinge of sweetness to high-end runs, there is a place for this pedal no matter what style you play!
