About this deal

The medieval period is often seen as a period heavily influenced by the clergy, with religions taking a central role in people’s daily lives as well as the men who took a central position in it. In attempting to voice the lives of the women from the medieval period, both extraordinary and ordinary, Janina Ramírez utilises a new approach in her discourses, namely relying on alternative interpretations based on recent findings in the fields of archaeology, newly available archives, as well as the writings written by the women themselves. I'm also a huge fan of Janina Ramirez' TV work, having been introduced to it via a documentary about Sutton Hoo, which my youngest was obsessed with watching, so I began reading this book with a high level of expectation.

Books like this are vital to start to set the record straight, but there is a question around how that plays to someone who is already on board with the project (and is critical of Great Anyone Theory).Ich liebe Serien wie "Vikings: Valhalla" oder auch "The Last Kingdom", weshalb ich einige Frauenfiguren aus Dr. Additionally, while the subject matter is engaging, the impact is lessened at times by the author’s writing, which can be clunky and not always serve the fascinating narratives within. I like the premise and the main idea about reframing history back into the context of the past instead of through our own lenses still stood out.

A joyous read ― Peter Frankopan, bestselling author of The Silk Roads --This text refers to the paperback edition.

But she chooses her case studies purposefully and manages to tell the story in a way that entertains without violating the principles of sound academia. But to anyone familiar with the Middle Ages, some of Ramirez’s strategies feel a touch cliché or expected. And its interesting reading forewords and the authorial voice in these projects to see the degree to which they see themselves fighting against orthodoxy (and where they come from). The Middle Ages are seen as a bloodthirsty time of Vikings, saints and kings; a patriarchal society that oppressed and excluded women.
