Not a single person he talks to accepts his right to ask nosy questions about a car crash, but apart from their resistance, the only evidence he unearths is the discovery that Barthelme’s Tuesday evening dinners were fictitious; all three of his alleged companions maintain that they never met for dinner. After reading and loving The Disappearance of Adele Bedeau, I knew I had to read more of Inspector Georges Gorski and his life in the sleepy.

Gorski, introduced in "The Disappearance of Adele Bedeau", is a fairly clever cop who thinks about moving to the "big" cities of Mulhouse and Strasbourg. In this controversial and exciting listen, Pollan explores caffeine’s power as the most-used drug in the world - and the only one we give to children (in soda pop) as a treat. Being with your partner may feel like rainbows and unicorns, but that doesn't mean you have a healthy, functioning relationship.

A lawyer, Bertrand Barthelme, in a small French town is killed in what looks an accident late at night but on a road he shouldn't be on if he was where he told his wife. The notebooks reveal the story of a young woman convinced that this charismatic therapist was responsible for her sister’s suicide. Burnet has really done an especially great job with the character of Raymond, who exemplifies the existential angst of doing and feeling what he wants to as opposed to conforming to social expectations; the same is true in the case of the elder Gorski, with the added problems of a failing home life and career which is anything but satisfying.

Sir Michael Caine knows a thing or two about gangs: whether that’s joining one as a kid, or playing them in movies for over 50 years. A week after the night she chases but fails to catch a mysterious trespasser outside her town house, some unknown party texts Tempe four images of a corpse that looks as if it’s been chewed by wild hogs, because it has been. Inrix says: "A35 in both directions closed due to flooding from Quarry Hill (Morden) to Poole Hill ( Bere Regis).Raymond goes through life as though he is the main character and becomes frustrated whenever he realises that he might not be. There are many references to meal times and the food eaten, the types and frequency of alcohol drunk, the bars visited and what went on in them and descriptions of the inhabitants. Marital discord, teenage struggles with conformity, cafe life, and class are delved into with such an excellent quality of writing that the novel is best read slowly. Brunet killed himself after publishing the previous book and left word that the follow-up would only be released after his mother’s death.

The ability to comment on our stories is a privilege, not a right, however, and that privilege may be withdrawn if it is abused or misused. Meantime, Barthelme's 17-year-old son Raymond starts a kind of investigation of his own, in an attempt to learn more about the father with whom he had always had a rather cold, distant relationship. This method was also used by Margaret Attwood in The Handmaid's Tale where the plot was revealed by a series of tapes where the experiences of the protagonist were recorded and listed to in retrospect. Remarkables REMARKABLES Intriguing, stunning, or otherwise remarkable books These include fine editions, foreign publications exceptional for their interest or production, special editions and some first-rate books from very small publishers. While welcoming the original take on crime fiction and the frequent dark humour, I couldn’t get past my dislike of prurient detail. The people of Japan believe that everyone has an ikigai - a reason for being; the thing that gets you out of bed each morning.
