Dark Angels fans are going to love all these tasty little morsels that Thorpe bakes into the plot and those who aren’t currently fans of the I legion may come away with a new appreciation for them. Gav Thorpe has already done sterling work with the Raven Guard and with Corax due in a few months to provide the climax to the Raven Guard Primarch's story arc, he is free to work on the Dark Angels. Gav wrote this before any of the major political events of 2016 either in the UK or the US occurred, yet somehow it almost seems like it predicted it. A swirling vortex of warp power was created around Caliban and it eventually broke apart, being pulled into the warp. I've got a few short story reviews I might manage to type up in the coming days ( Exocytosis and The Last Son of Prospero), but no promises right now.

The discussion then moved onto warrior lodges, which amused Typhon due to his long history with the dark mysteries and secret relationship with the Plaguefather and the Second of the Seven Pillars. My ‘Renegades’ mini-arc progresses through Renegades, the Rewards of Tolerance and Doubt Begets Heresy. Well here Gav straddles both, effectively bringing the Imperium Secundus arc to an end and simultaneously moving events on Caliban to a head and moving essential playing pieces into position for the end phase of the Heresy, which is likely still another ten books off at least. Once more we see the good intentions of the Calibanites, while also seeing the tragedy their actions summon to their world. By their nature narratives in these stories may overlap, spin-off and move alongside others, so it can get quite complicated navigating the range of books and short fiction.

I actually really enjoyed that book and think it did a decent job at redeeming the Legion from the exploits of Descent of Angels. These cookies help provide information on metrics the number of visitors, bounce rate, traffic source, etc. This, combined with his ancestry (the son of a witch and a daemon), results in his wild and dangerous nature. That novel, in a hundred little ways, was a serious game-changer as the years unfolded, not only because of the groundwork that it and Gav laid for future Dark Angels novels in M41 but also for what would later become the Horus Heresy series and the Dark Angels’ role within. There’s still plenty of unanswered questions regarding Luther and co, but the motives of the three key players on Caliban are becoming increasingly clear. Ever since Fallen Angels though Gav Thorpe has been the main driver behind them, writing several short stories. It had all the hallmarks of a defining conflict and Gav gave it a suitable air of gravitas and effect that lingered on for long after it was over and we moved into the final chapter. There has been a lot of speculation about where The Lion’s true loyalties lie during the Heresy for quite some time, and this novel does nothing to endear him to me. The interactions between Luther and the Dark Angels on Caliban also propel the novel along with the velocity of a Thunderhawk gunship.
