Tobacco (Lat. Nicotiana) is a genus of plants of the solanaceous family (Lat. Solanaceae). This family is represented by such apparent tobacco relatives as tomato, eggplant, bell pepper (capsicum), potato, boxthorn (better known as goji berries) as well as some very poisonous plants such as belladonna, datura and henbane. Tabac Original opens on a characteristically eau de cologne citrus burst that is indeed reminiscent of Mäurer & Witrz’s 4711. Sharp bergamot and lime notes are given a fatty bitterness by the presence of petitgrain. As they evaporate, rich and fatty jasmine notes lead us to the fragrance’s heart. Heart Notes Despite the progressive floral bouquet, Tabac is a mellow fragrance that has aged somewhat since its release. Contextually, this is quite paradoxical given that the 1950s was a period of particularly macho fragrances such as Old Spice or Skin Bracer.Coumarin gives tobacco a somewhat sweet hay note (together with benzaldehyde, coumarin creates the very recognizable almond-cherry accord), while macrolactones, mostly pentadecanolide, impart the rather easily perceptible musky tone. Among odorants that shape the scent of tobacco we even find ambroxan and some similar compounds: they impart the amber accord with all its multiple facets to the tobacco scent.
