Description

Alternately known as "The Japanese Evil Dead," this legendary, sought after independent Japanese cult film will enjoy its first ever North American release in any format and features new bonus content. The set-up and iconography are instantly recognizable to anyone familiar with the Evil Dead franchise but would otherwise play as nonsensical. The host has rigged fake scares to spook his team for the sake of ratings, but they prove unnecessary thanks to the sinister forces haunting the place. I’ve learned that the most effective way to deal with pesky hauntings is to get absolutely jacked and beat the shit out of the ghosts.

A group of friends works to transform an old hotel into a Halloween haunt attraction in time for the season. There are some genuine laughs to be had, such as Naoto’s realization “The shotgun isn’t my weapon, my muscles are! Fukazawa wisely kept the film’s running time brief, it comes in at just over an hour, and after a bit of buildup makes sure that Bloody Muscle Body Builder in Hell never slows down enough for the viewer to start caring about the obviously rubber body parts crawling around. They then spend a stupid gory, slapsticky night in the house where a claymation demon shows and up everyone but not ash gets possessed.

If there’s one thing horror fans love the most, it’s a solid scare that gets the adrenaline pumping. After a basic opening scene that sets the scene by depicting the murder of a young woman in a basement, the film takes a little while to get going again as we meet the titular character and get the excuse to go back to the house, where all hell breaks loose pretty quickly. It’s about a conjured house and a body builder, there’s no space for more in this hour and two minutes comedy splatter. Mika is a photojournalist putting together an article on the paranormal, and she remembers a photo that Naoto had once shown her of a house with an outsized female face smiling in its window. Exklusiv nur bei Cover A (das Artwork stammt übrigens von Graham Humphreys) ist eine handsignierte Autogrammkarte des Regisseurs Shinichi Fukazawa enthalten.

The movie’s original name, a mouthful though it may be, is equally beguiling: Bloody Muscle Body Builder in Hell. The more methodical pacing allows the sense of unease to unfurl slowly, eventually stripping away any semblance of hope through terrifying spectral encounters and devastating loss. Those who are into a more polished and professional standard of horror movie will do best to avoid this one. On the other, it can conjure the image of the outsider artist, driven by pure passion – and more obscure impulses – to create a labour of love outside of any production system. She’d warned them not to come, and it doesn’t take long to figure out why; an evil presence has taken root on the family’s rural land, and it wants them all. Combining cutting-edge design, illustration and journalism, we’ve been described as being “at the vanguard of the independent publishing movement. The film is not just a perfect homage to the series it is indebted to – it manages to take the blueprint that was laid out for it and take horror-comedy to new heights. With creative and innovative scares aplenty, Terrified is the type of horror film that lives up to its name; it’s freaking petrifying.
