I purchased the EQ through Sweetwater, after it arrived I connected with my rep there, he guided me with the installation and placement on my pedal board, his guidance was excellent and the product really helped me to achy the sound I was after. For someone who plays more than I do it would last shorter but still it’s not a current thirsty pedal. Before trying the 6-band with my current rig, I used a different Les Paul with higher-output pickups, which already thin out the sound (while giving the illusion of beef). For instance, EVH said he used the EQ to counteract the ‘thin’ tone of his Floyd Rose‑fitted guitars. However you use it, the low-noise circuitry keeps your core tone intact, while six EQ sliders allow you to add or cut up to 18dB. The only scenario I can imagine that could ruin this thing is if someone steps directly on the sliders, which is not an easy thing to do. The backlit faders are a real bonus too, especially when when I play under less-than-ideal stage lighting.

The company also released a mains powered Ten Band Graphic Equalizer to give even greater control, as well as rack‑mounted EQs for the really committed. EQs have their advantages, for instance in adjusting frequency balance to cater for variable acoustics in live venues, to minimise the risk of unwanted feedback, to balance partnering equipment or to compensate for other factors in the signal chain. The MXR EQ offers six bands covering all the essential guitar and bass frequencies, with each slider ready to deliver 18 dB's of cut or boost. Having input and output gain settings like on the bigger brother (10 band model) would be nice, but then it probably wouldn’t cost half as much. You can even use the Six Band EQ in the effects loop of your amp for a massive, adjustable lead boost. The MXR Six Band EQ covers all the essential guitar frequencies and has been upgraded with noise-reduction circuitry, true bypass switching, brighter LEDs for increased visibility, and lightweight aluminium housing. The MXR EQ offers 6 bands covering all the essential guitar and bass frequencies, with each slider ready to deliver 18 dB's of cut or boost. The Palmer lets you get full power tube saturation – then post EQ to power amps and multiple cabs like Ed did too. I nearly spent big on an EQ pedal with Q adjustment and at one stage considered a rack EQ but the new Boss has allowed me to hold back on that. Funny, I had the same experience, and also had a Peavey Renown (still do and it is my quiet practice amp/Glorious clean channel)!

We offer this service free of charge for every instrument, that's why we're not the cheapest on the internet, but you can be sure you won't get any nasty surprises once you get your new instrument. Other than that, the build quality is excellent, the led's are very bright and the faders are tight and won't move by accident if you kick it by accident or something.

Never did get there exactly, an evolving quest, but in the context of EVH tone I was happy to find that I still had my old MXR 6-band. Anyhow, a few years ago, when I got back into music and decided to start this blog, I was obsessed with nailing some approximation of old EVH tone. Whether you want to save a couple of bucks by performing a mod or upgrade yourself instead of paying a tech, or want to build your own piece of gear from scratch, I'm sure you will find something interesting here. Can’t remember exactly why I bought it (new), but had to be because of Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads, my two guit-wielding idols at the time.

So there I was with two “vintage” EQs, both used by tone god EVH at one time or another, and me using neither one much. For most people, it usually takes up to an hour to assemble the piano and requires two able-bodied persons. I have it set in a way where it doesn't change the sonic space I occupy with my band, doesn't really change my tone that much, but just gives a little extra in the mids/highs, gets rid of any flobby low end and gives me an extra gear to come forward in the mix a bit.
