For a large proportion of the world's population, using a nappy isn't as practical as not using a nappy - so it's natural and expected that parental assistance will play a significant role in keeping babies clean (just as it did for your grandparents and great grandparents). But that doesn't mean you need to forsake nappies to have a go yourself. Ways to incorporate & practicing EC into daily life

I'm going to share which covers and organic cloth diapers we used for our newborn, in hopes that you can make the best choice for your baby. We didn't do newborn cloth diapering perfectly. Hopefully you can learn from our mistakes. Every baby is different. I decided not to worry about his many and random wees with no cue and focus on poos which are very easy to see from the farting and grunting! Finn (and many other babies) very often poops and pees during a feed. And usually needs to pee and sometimes also poop immediately after waking from a nap or in the night. Pottying him at both these times means I catch most of it (at 10weeks old). LEARNING OUR WAY Poop and pee catch at the park (first time taking her out of the house). Offered potty at night when she was grunting and caught a poop. Potty during feed– Started popping off nappy before feeding (even if crying) and feeding in cradle position bum over potty. First let him just go during feed, now I stop to let him focus on his business and give good praise. When fully finished, potty away, square of Terry towelling under bum (bum pretty clean, not like opening a nappy with it everywhere on legs and bum etc) and continue with nice comfy cuddled feed. Have to watch willy early on in feed as don’t know wee cue and I often miss the start – willy rises above potty and my shorts & pants catch it! I use a small bottle between his legs to catch it sometimes too. Biggest so far has been 60ml! Often 30-40ml. Mother Love nipple cream (I switched to this brand since it comes in a glass jar instead of plastic.)I’m not going to give you a shopping list, in fact, I really don’t think you need much at all for EC. The more consistent you are the easier it is, but that doesn’t mean you have to be perfect. It’s way too hard to be a perfect mum. We are all doing our best. And sometimes that means taking a day off.

They also provide a little more complete coverage of baby’s bum if your baby is walking and you’re concerned about modesty. You’ll still probably see little cheeks peeking out, but there is more coverage 😉 Disposables will take about 3 of his giant wees before they are too swollen to fit comfy. They are still amazingly dry! So don’t feel bad about him being in it for a few hours. Have also noticed he doesn’t really like going in nappy so often dry between feeds and naps. If there’s a tiny bit of poo I wipe out with tissue and put a biodegradable liner from the reuseable nappies set up in there folded 4 times to cover the tiny bit of poo. I’ve started putting a folded liner in prior now so I can take out the tiny bit of poop rather than wipe and cover. Then I can use a non wet or only 1-2 wee disposable nappy and drastically reduce number per day. The start of the day and after a nap is the easiest EC catch because it’s biologically normal to urinate upon waking. Even at night, babies don’t wee in their sleep, they wee in between sleep cycles. It’s why they start fussing and maybe the reason they wake up crying in the first transition when their bladder is full of milk. One important thing to consider are you offering at the right times? Have your baby’s needs changed? Maybe they no longer need a poo after breakfast and it’s happening during dinner instead. Why did we fall for this in the “more educated” West? Beggars belief really when you start looking into it.

How do you put on the belt?

My just-turned 8 month old has gone in this every day since we got it and I have ZERO prior EC experience. It’s the perfect height for such a wee bumkim (and wee bum) and is very light. ” Disposable liners are available for both the Potette Plus and the OXO Tot 2-in-1 Go Potty. Or you can improvise and use a plastic bag lined with a paper towel. Disposable liners are useful when you are on-the-go and don't have access to water to wash out the potty. You simply tie the bag shut and toss it in the trash. (If it contains poop, I suppose you technically should dump the poop in the toilet and then dispose of the bag in the trash. Did you know you are supposed to do that with disposable diapers too?) Taking charge of the timing - knowing themselves in advance, every time, and doing something about it - that comes much much later; for many children at around conventional potty training age (say, two).
