Once the paint has dried, take a very fine wet & dry sanding paper and with a steady hand, sand down the painted area until you have it at the same level as the surrounding paint. For very small paint chips, wrap your sanding paper around the blunt end of a pencil to ensure you don’t scratch the surrounding paint.

Clean the area with alcohol and allow to air dry. Then apply the primer or base coat using a fine brush or a paint pen if it comes with the repair kit and allow to dry. As every conscientious vehicle owner knows, car paint doesn’t stay perfect forever. Scratches, chips and rust spots inevitably develop on even the most well-cared-for vehicles, and that’s why car paint repair kits were invented. Because of the common reasons above, stone chips are difficult to avoid, but they can be easily and usually inexpensively fixed. This makes stone chip repair easy for vehicle owners, which is an advantage as it is important to repair the damage as soon as possible, so it doesn’t worsen in rainy or icy conditions. The Ford paint looked cheap next to the Chipex though, which seemed like it offered a sophisticated selection of tools and fluids but actually didn’t make it any easier to get a decent finish. If you have a rare colour, it might be one of your only choices though. To understand the difference between brush tip, pen tip, and applicator tip styles, draw a crude circle on a piece of paper to mimic a paint chip. Now borrow some nail polish and attempt to fill the circle in completely. Do the same with your pen tip and applicator tip, using nail polish or another solution for the applicator tip. With this touch-up spray paint, you’ll have a color match you can trust. Dupli-Color is the only brand that offers paint colors that have been tested and approved by vehicle manufacturers, so you’ll get a close (if not perfect) color match to your vehicle’s original factory finish. Designed to repair both chips and scratches, this product has an abrasive prep tip that you’ll use to remove any loose paint and rust present. Then, you’ll switch to either the paint pen tip for fine scratches and small chips or the brush tip for larger chips. Either tip gets paint flowing in small amounts for easy control. Finally, you’ll apply the included clear protective coat to seal, protect, and finish your repair work. Have you ever driven behind a salt-spreader in winter and heard the miniature comets crashing into the front of your bumper and bonnet? Stone chips are more common in winter months and due to the cold wet conditions, a deep paint chip can rapidly progress to a more serious and costly problem as water and ice get into the chip and can affect the metal underneath. For even less outlay, there are several DIY options, ranging from pastes to full primer and paint repairs. But are they a false economy? We put eight to the test to find out. You dab the touch-up paint onto the chip, wait for it to dry and then wipe off excess to using a special blending liquid and cloth. Once you are happy with the result you can polish it using a supplied fluid and microfibre cloth. Using it is very satisfying, but deeper or larger chips need several coats to build up, with at least five minutes drying time in between applications. After five coats – each with a new swab and fresh pair of gloves – we gave up. The result was no better than the cheaper kits, which makes it impossible to justify the price unless your car is a very rare colour which no one else can match. Ford Service

Filling in paint chips can seem like a daunting task if you have never attempted it before. There’s the pressure of making sure you only get paint in the chip itself, along with the intensity of having only so much time to repair the chip properly. Langka removes all those barriers to really make paint chip repair an easy process, no matter how much painting experience you have. Protect your paint and body. While a chip repair kit is designed to restore areas of chipped vehicle paint, these kits can also offer two more significant benefits. They can seal your exterior paint and prevent the metal body underneath from developing rust. Every car features a layer of clear coat over its paint job, which helps protect the paint and keep rust from eating away at your car body. When paint starts to chip, the entire exterior of your vehicle is suddenly at an increased risk of these dangers. But when you apply a chip repair kit, you’ll also restore the lost clear coat and reinforce the protection your car needs. Affordable. Paying for a whole new paint job isn’t cheap – it’s a costly investment. Instead of paying to repaint your entire vehicle, you can use a car paint chip repair kit to fix the problem spots on your own. With low prices and only a small fraction of the cost of a traditional paint job, you can restore your vehicle’s exterior on your own. Plus, you won’t have the added expenses or frustrations of having to leave your car at the shop for days or a week until the work is finished. We paid a visit to Autoglass to try out some of their patented windscreen-fitting tech and had a go at changing a screen. Staff from the firm did the preparation, ensuring the car’s exterior and interior were protected and removing the car’s windscreen wipers. Sand down any raised edges around the chip. You can use a cutting compound like T-Cut for this, or very fine grain wet and dry sandpaper. Take care not to damage the surrounding clearcoat, don’t rub too hard. Unique Paint Jobs. Repairing paint chips on a vehicle with a custom paint job gets complicated. Depending on what type of paint is used and how well you know the original painter, you may or may not be able to buy a container of touch-up paint. This is something to consider both before and after having your vehicle custom painted. Some classic and prestige cars used to be supplied with a bottle of the factory paint in the glovebox, but those days are long gone and now you’ll be expected to pay for your own. They vary in price and complexity, so we tried five different types of touch-up paint kit to see which did the best job of disguising our damage. To deal with chip damage, we’ve produced our own range of chip, and car scratch repair pens. You simply pop the cap and cover chips and heavier scratches. As the paint dries, it blends in with the finish of your car, making scratches and chips disappear. If your windscreen has become damaged at the same time, you can book a windscreen chip repair
